It was night at Castle DDD, and Sword and Blade were patrolling the halls. They'd heard rumors about paranormal activity going on in the castle, but Sword merely brushed it off. Blade, however, was a little more superstitious.
"Uh, Sword, are you sure we can't quit our shift early tonight?" he asked.
"Oh, come on, Blade, don't tell me you actually believe those rumors?" Sword sighed.
"W-well, there were a lot of sightings, and no one who saw it would lie!"
"Blade, there's no such thing as ghosts. If there were my aunt would still be haunting me
"Still, did we HAVE to take the night shift?"
Sword sighed as he continued down the hall with the shorter warrior.
As he turned a corner, he caught a flash of white ahead. He stopped as he stared at where it had been.
"Hey, whatsa matter?" Blade asked.
"I thought I saw something. Probably just a Waddle Dee or something."
"Or maybe it was a-"
"Say ghost, and I'll slice your tongue off."
Blade clamped his mouth shut and followed Sword as he started down the hall again. Suddenly they both stopped.
"You hear that? "Blade asked.
"Depends, what do you hear?" Sword asked.
"Then yes, I hear that."
They listened quietly, and heard the soft tap of footsteps. They sounded like they were coming towards them from the hall up ahead.
"Let's go." Sword muttered. Blade nodded, and they both gripped the hilts of their swords tightly. They started down the hall again, and the steps got louder. They paused just at the corner, then jumped out, swords unsheathed.
Nothing was there.
Both warriors were stumped.
"I know we heard something." Sword mumbled.
"Yeah, it sounded like someone was right here." Blade added.
Then they heard a moan. They looked down the hall as the moans got louder. Suddenly, a white form appeared at the end of the hall, and it started flying towards them at a fast pace.
"Uh, Sw-Sword, do you see that ?" Blade stammered.
"Y-yeah, m-must be a prank." Sword replied.
The ghost let out another moan as it flew directly at Sword's head. Time seemed to slow for a moment as it passed right through his skull. Sword was frozen for a minute, before he and Blade turned around. The ghost faced them as well.
"The debt must be paid
" it moaned in a low voice.
Sword was the first to scream, before taking off down the hall where the ghost had come from earlier.
"Wait for me!" Blade shouted as he scrambled after him.
The ghost simply watched them until they turned the corner and their screams faded to nothing. It then flew off to other parts of the castle.
Meta Knight was in his, Sword, and Blade's room thinking about the ghost rumors he'd been hearing from Waddle Doo and the Waddle Dees, when he suddenly heard shouts. They grew louder and louder, until Sword burst into the room, slamming the door open, before slamming it shut and leaning against it. A second later, a loud thud was heard, and the door moved slightly from the impact. There was a low grumbling before Sword opened the door, and Blade scrambled in.
"Sorry." Sword muttered as he slammed the door again and he and Blade both leaned on it, panting.
"What's wrong?" Meta Knight asked. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
"You have no idea
" Blade panted.
"It was all-and then it was-and it-then it went-and-and-" Sword stammered, his arms flailing around as he tried to get everything out in one sentence."
"Sword, I thought it was Blade who spoke gibberish that barely anyone understands." Meta Knight remarked.
Blade was trying to calm Sword down, and upon hearing Meta Knight, paused for a second as he dropped his arms to his sides and gave Meta Knight an annoyed look. Meta Knight's eyes turned pink for a second in humor, before returning to yellow.
"What happened?" he asked.
"We were patrolling, when suddenly we a ghost." Blade replied.
"What makes you think it was a real ghost?"
"Because it passed right through me!" Sword exclaimed, shaking his head. "My head feels like it was stuck in a freezer for three hours."
" Meta Knight's eyes turned green in thought as he compared what he'd been hearing with what Sword and Blade had experienced.
"Perhaps we should go talk to DDD and Tiff's family." He murmured.
"Why?" Sword asked.
"To see if they know anything. I have been hearing rumors around the castle. Perhaps they can shed some light on the subject."
"You'll be coming with us, right?"
Meta Knight rolled his eyes as he nodded. "Yes."
"Alright, let's go." Blade said.
The three knights headed for the door and opened it, but froze. Two ghosts floated in the hall in front of their door.
"It followed us!" Blade shouted.
"And it's got a friend!" Sword added.
They both screamed and slammed the door shut, and the click of a lock was heard. Meta Knight had been a few inches out of the room, so he was locked out. He studied the ghosts, and they in turned stared back at him for a moment, before looking at each other and flying away, disappearing down the hall.
"They're gone, you two can come out now." He called.
"We're not leaving this room!" Sword shouted through the door.
"You want to stay in there alone all night?"
"We're safer in here than out there!"
'Right, because ghosts can't pass through solid doors or walls
' Meta Knight though with a sigh.
"Y-you can't make us come out!" Blade yelled hesitantly.
Meta Knight knew he could easily force his way back in and drag the two out by their feet if he had to, but sighed.
"Very well, but ask yourselves this, what are you more afraid of; a ghost, or my training?" he asked, before walking off.
Back in their room, Sword and Blade glanced at each other as they pondered Meta Knight's question.
"Er, what do you think he meant by that?" Sword asked nervously.
"That tomorrow morning's gonna be miserable
" Blade replied.
They stared ahead blankly for a minute.
" Sword muttered.
